GUYANESE: Dr. Rhonda Andrea Souvenir

FORTY-Year-Old Guyanese National Dr. Rhonda Andrea Souvenir has been listed among one hundred inspiring black scientists in America. Her listing falls under the category ‘rising stars’ on the list of one hundred persons comprising investigators and professors in the medical field.

The list was published on February 03, 2020, by CrossTalk, the official blog of Cell Press, a leading publisher of cutting-edge biomedical and physical science research and reviews in the United States of America and comes even as Black History Month is celebrated in the Month of February.

Rhonda Andrea Souvenir was born on April 03, 1979, in the mining town of Linden Region 10, Guyana to Lloyd and Gladys Souvenir who are now both deceased.

In an interview with BIG Smith News Watch, Dr. Souvenir recalled that before moving to the United States in 2000 to complete her studies, she attended the St. Roses High School.

The only girl child to her mother and father, the young Souvenir also attended the Anna Regina Primary School in Essequibo, Region 2. She told BIG Smith News Watch she could not recall the exact age that moved to the Cinderella County.

Dr. Souvenir explained that she is very fond of discoveries and doing research. At the moment there are close to two dozen research publications in which she has played major roles, sometimes acting in a lead capacity since entering the medical field.

“Make better mistakes tomorrow, some days things are not great; tomorrow is another day…another chance to get it right” Dr. Rhonda Andrea Souvenir reminded as she recited a quote she uses as a guide.

Dr. Souvenir was also schooled in the following areas as her Curriculum Vitae, shared with this publication pointed out:  Postdoctoral Fellowship 2013 – 2018 University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa Department of Internal Medicine Advisor: Dr. E. Dale Abel, Postdoctoral Fellowship 2012 – 2013 University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah Department of Endocrinology Advisor: Dr. E. Dale Abel, Ph.D., Microbiology and Molecular Genetics 2006 – 2011 Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, California Thesis: “Mechanism of Erythropoietin-induced Neuroprotection in: in vivo and in vitro models of hypoxia-ischemia” Mentor: Jiping Tang MD, B.S. – Biology 2005 Oakwood, University, Huntsville, AL

The Guyanese Daughter of the soil is also affiliated to a number of leading organizations and institutions in the United States and also holds a number of honors and awards including but not limited to the American Society of Hematology (ASH) Abstract Achievement Award. 2016 A merit-based award given to trainees with high-scoring annual meeting abstracts and Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology (ATVB) 2015 Travel Award for Young Investigators to attend and present at the American Heart Association.

In his post which highlighted the 100 inspiring black scientists Dr. Antentor O. Hinton Jr. noted that his decision to recognize these individuals came from a discussion where a colleague and himself were speaking with an undergraduate who asked two questions (1) are there any other black science professors, and (2) if they do exist, why aren’t we learning about their accomplishments in our curriculum?

February each year is observed as Black History Month.
