Housing Ministry advances relocation, new developments

The Ministry of Housing is advancing several housing and infrastructure initiatives as part of the Government of Guyana’s broader efforts to provide affordable housing, regularise communities and improve living conditions for low-income families.
As part of a recent site visit exercise, Dr. Martin Pertab, Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Housing, and his team visited the Cummings Park squatting area, where they met with the remaining residents to discuss plans for their relocation.
According to the Ministry, 89 residents initially occupied the area, with the majority having since been successfully relocated. Fourteen residents remain to be relocated.
The relocation is necessary because the residents are currently occupying an active flight zone, making the continued occupation a safety concern.
The Ministry’s team also visited Great Diamond Blocks 1 and 5, where electrical infrastructure is currently being established to support new housing schemes.
The Government of Guyana, through the Ministry of Housing, has invested GYD $220 million in the electrical infrastructure project, which is expected to eventually provide electricity to approximately 3,200 households.
The site visit exercise concluded at the entrance of St. Cuthbert’s Mission, where a 144-acre parcel of land is being prepared for the development of a new housing scheme.
The proposed development is expected to accommodate approximately 500 households and forms part of the Government’s long-term, countrywide housing initiative.
The project is also expected to provide housing opportunities for squatters along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway, as well as low-income families seeking access to affordable housing.
The series of site visits highlights the Ministry’s ongoing focus on addressing squatting, expanding housing opportunities and developing the infrastructure needed to support new communities across Guyana.
