Harmon to pull a Jagdeo stunt on government over Local Gov’t election

The APNU- AFC plans to “up pressure’ on the Irfaan Ali led PPP/C government in a bid to demand local government elections. Local government elections were last held in 2018 and are due this year.

On Wednesday, Opposition Leader Joseph Harmon likened the delay to that of a breach of the constitution.

Harmon promises to “internationalise” the issue, “every part of this country, there will be pressure brought to bear on the government,” Harmon warned, “Everywhere Mr Ali goes, everywhere Mr Mark Phillips go they will be reminded that the constitution, the supreme law of Guyana and it must be respected, Harmon said.

Earlier this week, President Irfaan Ali shrugged off calls for holding local government elections until the government attempts to address several issues affecting the electoral process and the Guyana Elections Commission, “we have to ensure we have a system that is working, a system that we trust,” he said.

Ali who was sworn in as President on August 2nd, five months after the March 2nd elections said he is swarmed with letters from people who “do not want to go through that process again”.

The President has promised to appoint an international commission to determine what led to the five month long elections, the commission he said will help to “identify the weaknesses, the threats,” that affected the results of the 2020 polls.

That Commission is yet to be appointed. The 2020 elections were by far the most contentious election in recent history, it lasted for five month during which there were many legal challenges and a recount exercise.

Two elections petitions have also been filed challenging the recount.
