Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha on Wednesday met with a visiting United States industry delegation to discuss investment opportunities in Guyana’s rapidly growing agriculture sector.

The delegation was led by former United States Ambassador to Guyana, Sarah-Ann Lynch, and focused on potential partnerships aimed at expanding agricultural production and agro-processing.

During the discussions, Minister Mustapha highlighted the transformation taking place within the sector and outlined the government’s vision of establishing Guyana as a leading agricultural producer in the region.

He noted that while agricultural output has increased significantly in recent years, the government’s focus is also on building a strong agro-industrial sector capable of adding value to locally produced commodities.

The minister said efforts are underway to create strategic partnerships between local stakeholders and international investors, including opportunities for large-scale agricultural projects, agro-processing ventures and Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs).

Mustapha also emphasized the importance of local private sector involvement in the development of emerging agricultural industries, citing the corn and soya bean project in the Tacama Savannah as a key example of government and private sector collaboration.

He further pointed to growing market opportunities within the CARICOM region and highlighted Guyana’s competitive advantages, including vast areas of arable land and abundant freshwater resources.

Also attending the meeting were Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dhaneshwar Deonarine, and President of the Caribbean Poultry Association and Managing Director of Bounty Farm Ltd, David Fernandes.
