Guyana Participates in Election of New IICA Director General

Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha represented the Cooperative Republic of Guyana at the elections for the Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), where he participated in the voting process and cast Guyana’s vote in support of Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim.
Dr. Ibrahim was elected to serve as the new Director General of IICA for the 2026–2030 term. He is scheduled to assume office on January 15, 2026, during a formal ceremony at the Institute’s headquarters in San José, Costa Rica.
He will succeed Argentine veterinarian Manuel Otero, who has led the Institute since 2018 and was re-elected in 2021.
The Government of Guyana has extended congratulations to Dr. Ibrahim on his election, describing it as a collective regional accomplishment that reflects the hemisphere’s shared vision for unity, innovation, and sustainable agricultural development.
