Guyana Development Bank to expand access through mobile app, community desks

September 21 2026
The soon-to-be-launched Guyana Development Bank (GDB) is expected to expand access to financing across the country through a mobile application and dedicated community desks in commercial bank branches nationwide.
President Dr Irfaan Ali made the announcement on Sunday during an open discussion with senior representatives from the banking and private sectors, entrepreneurs and community advocates.
The mobile application will allow Guyanese to apply for financing without having to visit a physical branch, while community desks will provide GDB services in areas where commercial banks already operate, including hinterland, riverine and rural communities.
The initiative is intended to address longstanding barriers to financing faced by residents outside the main urban centres, while expanding access to opportunities in sectors including agriculture, tourism and small business.
The Government also plans to train successful local entrepreneurs as facilitators in their communities. These facilitators will assist residents in developing and strengthening business ideas and preparing loan-ready proposals before applications are submitted.
“Someone may come in with a great idea, but we can make the idea stronger. The whole intention is to use this opportunity to build something that is long-lasting, strategic, strong,” President Ali said.
Ali said the approach is designed to be grassroots-focused, with the bank expected to cater to communities across the country from the outset.
The Guyana Development Bank is scheduled to begin operations on **October 5**, with an initial capital injection of **US$100 million**.
Eligible borrowers are expected to have access to financing of up to G$3 million, including loans offered at zero interest and without collateral.
The model will also incorporate mentorship, training and technical assistance as part of efforts to help entrepreneurs develop sustainable businesses and improve their ability to access financing.
The Government said the combination of digital access, community-based support and financing is intended to ensure that the new development bank can serve Guyanese across the country from its launch.
