GTA/MCYS Independence Tennis tournament serves off with under-12 action

The Guyana Tennis Association (GTA) in conjunction with the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports (MCYS) served off their 60th Independence Anniversary Open on Sunday, May 17 at the National Park Courts.

Action served off with under-12 action, with Z Hinkerson defeating H Chan in the boy’s category with a 6-2 win to get the ball rolling.

Y Mangru also had a solid opening match in the tournament with a 6-3 win over R Narayan.

Switching to the under-12 girls, L Singh opened her tournament with a comfortable 6-2 win over K Doris while I Grannum topped M Shivnauth 6-0 in the opening matches of the morning.

The most competitive match of the morning happened between Breyanna Younge and Mia Bullen with both athletes making great shots against each other; however, it was Younge who finished on top with a 7-5 victory. Denesia Boston also looked strong with a comfortable 6-1 win against Brielle Paul.

Meanwhile, President of the GTA, Cristy Campbell in remarks on the opening day extended gratitude on behalf of the GTA to the National Sports Commission (NSC), the MCYS and the Government of Guyana for their sponsorship of the tournament and continued support and partnership with the tennis fraternity that is part of the 60th Jubilee celebrations.

Additionally, the tournament will feature the under-12, novice, open, over 35 and over 45 categories with all games set to be played at the National Park Courts on weekdays from 15:30hrs to 18:00hrs while games will start from 09:30hrs on Saturday and Sunday and conclude on 18:00hrs on both days.

The tournament concludes on May 24th.
