Two Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ranks have been charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking following their arrest in a police operation that led to the seizure of 316 pounds of cannabis.

The accused, 40-year-old Edward McCalmont from Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, and 24-year-old John Johnson from Timehri Docks, East Bank Demerara, were arrested on Saturday, July 27, 2024, during a successful intelligence-led police operation.

The defendants appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates' Court, where the charge was read to them. They both pleaded not guilty but were remanded to prison. Their next court appearance is scheduled for Monday, August 19, 2024.
