GBF reschedules National 3×3 Championship to October

The Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF) has rescheduled its National 3×3 Championship, originally set for September 27-28, to October 18-19 at the Seawall Bandstand. This change aims to enhance participation and planning due to the tournament’s significance.
This year’s championship will be pivotal in selecting the team to represent Guyana at the FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup, taking place from November 27-30 in León, Mexico.
A total of 16 teams will compete, an increase from last year’s 10, with the defending champions, the Renegades, looking to retain their title. The winners will receive $500,000, while the second, third, and fourth places will earn $200,000, $100,000, and $50,000, respectively.
GBF President Michael Singh emphasized that this championship will serve as the exclusive selection process for the AmeriCup team, highlighting its importance in Guyana’s international calendar. He noted that the government has covered all expenses for the last two AmeriCup appearances, allowing the team to focus on preparation and performance.
This year, the GBF plans to adopt a more competitive approach by entering the selected national team into various international 3×3 competitions to gain experience against top-level opponents. Singh acknowledged that previous teams lacked sufficient exposure to elite talent before the AmeriCup and aims to rectify this.
In last year’s championship, the Renegades, featuring players Jude Corlette, Travis Belgrave, Nikkoloi Smith, and Dominic Vincente, defeated a strong Linden team in the final. The successful players then represented Guyana at the 3×3 AmeriCup in Puerto Rico, gaining valuable international experience.
