A 43-year-old man who is accused of gunning down a Trans Guyana Airways employee was on Wednesday charged with murder. Allistair Naughton called “Foots” or “Markey”, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Naughton of East LaPenitence, Georgetown was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on May 28, 2021, at Camp Street, Georgetown, while being in the company of others, he murdered Ronald Omar Smith in the course or furtherance of a robbery.

He was remanded to prison until July 6, 2021.

Facts presented by the court prosecutor stated that on the day in question,  Smith made several stops via car conducting business in and out of the city, in the company of a miner who was driving him in motor car PZZ 6065. The now-dead man made a sale of gold and placed $437,000 cash he received in a haversack and went to visit his girlfriend.

After the visit, Smith and his girlfriend were standing in front of the Impeccable  Beauty Salon on Camp Street, Georgetown, when they were confronted by two men on a motorcycle. The men were armed with guns.  The pillion rider dismounted and discharge two rounds at Smith who fell to the ground.

The gunman and his accomplice fled with Smith’s haversack containing the cash. Smith was picked up and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he died while receiving medical attention.
