Fire department gifted water pumps to increase efficiency

L-R: Nand Persaud’s Safety Officer Jagroo, Regional Fire Officer Hemchandra Persaud and Section Leader Lennox Crandon

Just hours after the Guyana Fire Service encountered difficulties battling a blaze which completely destroyed the upper flat of a woman’s home and gutted the lower, the Guyana Fire Service was gifted three water pumps to help with its firefighting capabilities. The pump was donated by Nand Persaud Group of Companies out of Berbice.

It should be noted too that prior to the far, only last week the Regional Commander of the Guyana Fire Service Hemchandra Persaud made a request for donations of firefighting resources to its in its work.

The donation on of the pump was done on Friday by the Chief Executive Officer of the company and handed over by the company’s Safety Officer. In an interview with BIG Smith News Watch on Friday, the CEO said that his company was able to donate some equipment which fire department in Region 6 needed in order to better its quality of service to the Berbice people and hopes that it is indeed able to bring relief to both the firemen and residence.

During the fire on Thursday which destroyed a home and small business at Ankerville, Port Mourant, firefighters were having the devil’s own job to get the pump for the tender started thus effectively proving difficult for them to effectively battle the blaze.

The three pumps which are valued at approximately $150,000 were given to the Region 6 fire department during a brief handing over ceremony at the Nand Persaud office located at #36 Village, Corentyne Berbice. The pumps also came with hoses and other accessories.

“I was very convinced based on the Fire Chief’s explanation on the importance of those resources that were urgently needed by the department, so I told him yes I will make the contribution and I had one of my staff locate and purchase the pumps and hand it over which concluded my promise on their needs” the businessman noted.

He said he is of the view that had the donation been made earlier, possibilities are that the house which was destroyed by fire on Thursday could have been saved.

Over the last weeks, the company has been making donations to the police force and other organizations within region 6.
