Man must serve at least 18 years in jail for raping 3-Y-O

Thirty-three-year-old Troy Chapman, who was sentenced to life in prison for raping a three-year-old child, must serve at least 18 years before being eligible for parole.

Chapman pleaded guilty to a charge for the offence of engaging in sexual penetration with a child under age 16.

The young child was attacked on June 15, 2021, at her home. The prosecution’s case was that Chapman was known to the child’s parents and regularly visited their home.

On the day in question, the child was left in his care for a moment when he raped her. A passerby caught him in the act and alerted the child’s parents who called in the cops. The gender of the child was not revealed in court.

During Chapman’s sentencing hearing on Tuesday, Demerara Sexual Offences Court Judge, Sandil Kissoon admonished him for the unthinkable act.

Alluding to the frequent instances of sexual offences being committed against children, the Judge said that it is the duty of the court to impose sentences that will serve as a deterrent to like-minded persons.

He told Chapman that he committed one of the gravest crimes against humans. The Judge described the sexual assault on the toddler as being “disturbing and horrific”.

The convicted rapist, who was represented by lawyer Teriq Mohammed, was given credit for the time he spent in pretrial custody.

The prosecutors were State Counsel Paneeta Persaud, State Counsel Caressa Henry and State Counsel Cicelia Corbin.
