Head of the Guyana Police Force Corporate Communications Unit Mark Ramotar has remained mum all day Friday after being grilled by the press on the arrest and release of Racecar Driver Mark Viera.

Viera was arrested by the police in Regional Division 4B on Thursday night, Regional Commander Superintendent Krishna Ramana confirmed to BIG Smith News Watch late on Friday night.

This publication was forced to seek an official comment from the commander after Ramotar kept reading messages sent to him about the arrest but ignored them outrightly.

Commander Ramana explained to this publication that Mark Viera was arrested in connection with an incident that took place in November at a race meet. At that event, Mark Viera and another man got into a fight.

BIG Smith News Watch learned that a file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecution for advice on the matter and she returned the file this week instructing the police to charge Viera with five offenses.

After Viera was arrested, he was told of the charges which were recommended by the Director of Public Prosecution to be instituted against him. However, he was not charged but sent away from the police station on self-bail. The commander when asked, did not say why Viera was not charged.

The DPP has recommended that Mark Viera be charged with Malicious Damage to property, Assault causing actual bodily harm, assault, abusive language, and giving false information to a peace officer.
