Farmers’ Markets to become steady feature across Guyana

October 8 2026
Farmers’ Markets are expected to become a monthly feature across several regions, providing producers with sustained opportunities to sell their goods while giving consumers greater access to fresh, affordable, locally produced food.
The initiative is being expanded as part of Agriculture Month 2026, with Farmers’ Markets currently being held at several locations across the country to connect farmers and agro-processors directly with consumers.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha visited the Farmers’ Market at the Sophia Exhibition Centre yesterday, where he interacted with farmers, vendors and shoppers and received feedback on the initiative.
The Farmers’ Market was established as an initiative of President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali to strengthen the direct link between producers and consumers. It provides farmers with additional market opportunities while allowing Guyanese to purchase fresh produce at affordable, farm-gate prices.
Since its introduction, the initiative has provided farmers and agro-processors with another avenue to market their products directly to consumers. The reduction of intermediaries can allow farmers to secure better returns while consumers benefit from competitive prices.
During his visit, Mustapha viewed a wide range of locally produced commodities on sale, including fresh fruits and vegetables, ground provisions, meats and agro-processed products.
The planned monthly markets are expected to broaden the initiative’s reach, creating more consistent market opportunities for producers while strengthening access to locally produced food for consumers across Guyana.
