Ex-GTU President Sentenced to 19 Years for Raping Child

July 17 2025
A former President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU), Colwyn King, has been sentenced to 19 years in prison for raping a six-year-old girl.
The 61-year-old was convicted last month by a 12-member jury at the High Court in Georgetown.
The jury found him guilty of committing the crime during two separate incidents in April 2021—one at night and another in the afternoon.

On both occasions, the child had been left in his care.
The trial was conducted before Justice Simone Morris.
King was initially represented by Attorney-at-Law Tonza Sarrabo during the trial. However, for the sentencing hearing held on July 17, 2025, he chose to represent himself.
Following the guilty verdict, King—who had been previously released on bail—was immediately taken into custody. On Thursday, Justice Morris handed down the 19-year sentence.
The case was prosecuted by State Counsel Muntaz Ali and State Counsel Geneva Wills.
This is not the first time King has faced such allegations. He was previously charged in 2009 in a separate child rape case but was acquitted in 2016 following a jury trial.
