The $90 million Hunter Street Road built by race car driver Mark Vieria

The Ministry of Public Works has a ‘Road Bible’ and each page is worth millions of dollars. The road bible is a listing of all roads in the various communities which either need rehabilitation or repairs.

The ‘Road Bible’ as described by Minister of Works, Bishop Juan Edghill will see better traffic flow and safer roads in and around communities while ensuring that sight is not lost to existing and emerging major projects.

Edghill was at the time speaking at the commissioning of the Hunter Street GYD $90 million road project which was done by race car driver Mark Vieira.

It was at the commissioning that a call was made for contractors who felt that they had no chance of bidding and getting through with contracts to come on board and be part of Guyana’s development process.

The call was made specifically to those contractors and companies who have no experience in building or bidding for road projects. Vieira himself was previously not associated with anything construction much less building roads.

“I am inviting contractors who felt that they have not had a chance before to come on board. Guyana is open to participation from everyone. Get your best engineers, hire the best teams and come on board. If funding is made available for fixing all the roads in this country, we don’t have enough contractors” Edghill told the gathering.

Hunter Street between Front Road and Mandela Avenue has been under reconstruction for months now. The road was previously impassable given that its shoulder; particularly the western side was eroding into the nearby trench, effectively compromising the structural integrity of the road.

The project also saw the widening of the said road which has taken up most of the draining which previously existed.

Hunter Street is famously used to pull traffic out of Central Georgetown onto the East Bank Demerara and sometimes used to flow traffic into the city whenever there is a heavy traffic build-up through Lombard, High and Broad Streets among others.
