In a breathtaking display of camaraderie and respect, law enforcement officers from Guyana and the New York Police Department (NYPD) clashed in a thrilling T20 cricket match on Sunday at the Eve Leary Sports Club to pay tribute to the late Detective Randolph Holder.
The match honored the legacy of Holder, a proud Guyanese-born officer who was tragically killed in the line of duty in New York in 2015. The NYPD delegation is in Guyana to commemorate the anniversary of his untimely passing, making the occasion even more poignant.
Batting first, the Guyana Police Force unleashed a phenomenal performance, racking up an impressive 229 runs for 5 wickets in their 20 overs. The star of the show was none other than Troy Benn, who dazzled the crowd with a sensational century off just 53 balls, earning him the coveted Man of the Match title. The NYPD bowlers, including Kyle Michael, T. Chaudhury, and Kelvin Leitch, each claimed a wicket, but the team could only muster 156 runs for 9 wickets in response. Leitch emerged as the top scorer for the NYPD with a valiant 47 runs.
President of Guyana Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali made his mark with the ball as well, taking 2 wickets for 25 runs and contributing to a crucial run-out. Ivor Trotz (3-22) and Ronald Ali (2-27) also shone with their impressive bowling efforts.
Following the match, President Ali expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Minister of Home Affairs Hon. Oneidge Walrond, Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken, and the senior command of the Guyana Police Force for their exceptional leadership and the enduring partnership with the NYPD over the past decade. He emphasized that this collaboration exemplifies mutual support and respect in their shared mission to protect communities.
President Ali passionately highlighted the ultimate sacrifices made by officers in their service, urging all ranks to take immense pride in their selfless dedication to duty. The event was graced by notable figures, including Colonel Sheldon Howell, Director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), and various members of the Guyana Police Force’s Executive Leadership Team.
