CPL Finals in Guyana for next three years

“On the 30th of September, for the first time in CPL history, the finals will be in Guyana,” President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Wednesday night announced. He was at the time delivering the feature address at the Launch of Caribbean Premier League 2022 and Cricket Carnival, Guyana National Stadium, Providence, Guyana.

He further announced that the finals will be held in Guyana for the next three years.

“Fellow Guyanese, for many years you’ve asked for it, for many years you’ve asked for the finals. Each of us now must be a great host, each of us now must be a part of welcoming the rest of the world to this mega event…that is why we are going for three years,” His Excellency proudly stated.

The winning CPL trophy has eluded the Guyana team – the Guyana Amazon Warriors – for several years but the President is hopeful that the team will win this year’s competition.

Dr. Ali disclosed that the Cricket Carnival will go for two weeks with a celebration of culture.

Sport Minister Charles Ramson Jnr. stated that Guyana welcomes this opportunity since “sport has always been the universal unifier,” serving to promote unity across ethnic and social backgrounds.

Delivering remarks at the event, Chief Executive Officer of CPL Peter Russell said 32 matches have been hosted in Guyana since the start of the Premier League. He disclosed that in addition to cricket, the CPL will be launching a unique music talent search to select an artiste to perform at all games. “There is so much to get excited about…and we can’t wait to get started,” Russell said.

The CPL has over the years increased tourists in its host country. On Wednesday evening, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce noted that the sport sector is a major contributor to the economy. By extension, she stated that the Hero CPL earns billions in sponsorships annually and Guyana is poised to welcome travellers from across the globe for the upcoming “biggest party in sport.”

“We are therefore excited at the return of the CPL to Guyana. Since building the strong brand of the league, this year’s event will see the launching of an innovative fusion of cricket and carnival that holds much promise for the showcasing and development of our tourism product.”

The Minister said there will be music festivals, cultural shows, road march competitions, soca competitions and tours to Guyana’s many tourist destinations.
