Man with 88-yrs sentence for killing ex-lover wants court’s compassion

Jermaine Maynard, the man who shot his 20-year-old ex-lover to the head back in 2013 and is currently serving 88 years’ imprisonment for the murder, is asking the Court of Appeal for compassion through reducing his sentence.

In January 2016, Maynard, 50, was found guilty of murdering Carlissa Matthews on December 31, 2013, at Stabroek, Georgetown.

During a hearing this morning, Maynard’s lawyer, Nigel Hughes informed the Court having perused the records of appeal, he would only be challenging the 88-year prison sentence which in his view is excessive, and not in keeping with established sentencing guidelines.

Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Dionne McCammon was given until this Friday to respond.

The court comprising Chancellor of the Judiciary Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards and Justices of Appeal Dawn Gregory and Rishi Persaud will entertain arguments in this case on February 16, 2021.

According to reports, Matthews was shot in the head in the vicinity of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), at Stabroek, Georgetown on Old Year’s Night of 2013.

It was reported that minutes before the shooting, Maynard had approached the young woman, who had severed their relationship six months’ prior, and requested to speak with her.

After the woman declined, he left and returned with a gun and shot her in the head. It was reported that after receiving the shot to the head, the woman fell to the ground, and Maynard stood over her and continued firing.

The injured woman was picked up and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she died the following day.

Following the shooting, Maynard fled the scene but was captured three days later at the ‘back track’ crossing at Springlands, Corentyne, Berbice as he was about to board a boat to Nickerie, Suriname.

Before he killed Matthews, Maynard had been previously found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment for killing another woman, with whom he had shared a relationship.
