A 46-year-old cane harvester was found dead on Republic Day at Number 76 Village, one day after he allegedly carried out a vicious knife attack on his reputed wife.

The dead man has been identified as Patrick Mahendra Singh, of the same village. Police suspect he ingested a poisonous substance.

According to investigators, at about 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 22, Singh’s reputed wife, 47-year-old Olive Thompson, ran bleeding into a neighbour’s yard and reported that she had been stabbed. The suspect, who was allegedly armed with a knife and carrying a bottle, fled the scene on a motorcycle.

Thompson was rushed to the Number 75 Public Hospital, where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Police later discovered Singh’s body at around 10:45 a.m. on February 23 at Number 76 Village.

He is believed to have ingested gramoxone, a highly toxic pesticide. A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted shortly.
