In Region Seven’s Upper Mazaruni River community of Jawalla, a school is planned for construction to provide comfortable access to secondary education.

On Wednesday morning, Education Minister Priya Manickchand announced this via her Facebook page. Once built, the school will eliminate overcrowding at the D.C. Caesar Fox Secondary school in Waramadong and put an end to primary tops in the region.

“It does not have space for children and children across the region in other places like Kamarang and Phillipai are going to what we call secondary departments in primary schools (primary tops),” Manickchand said while on a visit to Jawalla to scope out land for the construction of the school.

The Jawalla Secondary school will have a capacity for 500 children and will cater for 400 students in dormitories. According to Manickchand it will also feature modern science and home economics labs, technical and vocational education spaces and a library.

“I am very happy to get kicking of this project so hopefully by the end of the first quarter next year we are going to have a new school,” Manickchand said.

With the construction of this new school along with several others across the country, the government is aiming to make universal secondary education a reality by 2025.

Manickchand last week also announced a new secondary school in Kopinang, Region Eight.

Construction is also underway for schools in Hosororo, Kwebana, and Waramuri in Region One. In Region Four, the Yarrowkabra Secondary and the Good Hope Secondary schools are expected to be completed soon.

A secondary school is also earmarked for Orealla in Region Six and Karasabai in Region Nine.

Other schools, including several that were recently devastated by fire, such the North West Secondary and North Ruimveldt Secondary schools, are also undergoing renovations and extensions.
