Broomes goes to jail on Mothers Day

Minister of Youth Affairs in the Ministry of the Presidency Simona Broomes on Sunday went to jail.
The minister told the press that she decided to visit male inmates at the Timehri Prisons on Mothers Days as it is her view that, despite their circumstances; on a day like Mothers Day the inmates of all prisons need to feel that motherly love.
Broomes, a mother three; told inmates that her children are not close physically today so she decided to spend some time with inmates.
In one on one conversations with inmates, Minister Broomes received messages from some of them who wished to send a greetings to their mom on Mothers Day from their jail cell.
Broomes took numbers of some of the inmates mothers promised to have the messages and greeting delivered to them on their behalf.
There was at least one inmate who told the minister that all he wants to do is hear his mother’s voice.

At that point Broomes sought and got the permission from the officer in charge to have the prisoner mak that call to his mother.
It was also during the conversations with the inmates that they used the opportunity to speak of what are some of the programs they wish to have government implement to reduce the influx of young boy and girls entering the prison system.
One inmate also suggested outreaches to be led by inmates and former inmates who will engage school aged children and other young people about the disadvantages of going to prison.
The visit is said to be the first of a series to be conducted by the minister as she engages young people in the various communities and institutions as she seeks to run with a government agenda to bring opportunities to young people.
