Former Head of the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) Sydney James turned himself over to SOCU at 13:00h on Monday, accompanied by Attorneys-at-law Dexter Smartt and Jevon Cox.

According to Smartt, a letter was sent to the Commissioner of Police on Friday, after a wanted bulletin was issued for Mr. James, indicating an intention to visit SOCU on Monday.

Mr. James was granted bail in the sum of $300,000. His Attorney noted that James is under investigation for some occurrences during his time in office but the details of the charge have not yet been released.

The Police issued a wanted bulletin for James on November 03, 2021. He is wanted in c with for questioning in relation to a series of reports of obtaining money by false pretence. James served as the Head of SOCU up to September 2019 after a special audit had unearthed several instances of mismanagement of funds and falsification of documents at the entity.

James is a former Guyana Defence Force Rank who headed the G2 Branch of the GDF. This branch is tasked with intelligence gathering. He was seconded to the Guyana Police Force under the Donald Ramotar administration.
