A 25 year old mother of Lot 57 Goed Fortuin West Bank Demerara unexpectedly went into labour on Thursday and gave birth to a bouncing baby boy.

Although she has no idea who the father of the child is, she was sure that she is mother.

Priya Mootoor after giving birth to the baby quietly, severed the umbilical cord and discard of it in a drain next to her home.

She then placed the baby into a waste pan and ordered her five year old child to dump the still alive and breathing baby into the pit latrine at the back of their yard.

She lives in a yard with a total of 21 other persons who have divided a small house into different quarters.

When the BIG Smith Crime Watch visited the home of the family, we were told that after the woman caused her baby to be dumped in the toilet, she remained in her apartment.

It was only after a male relative went to use the said toilet that he observed blood and then noticed that a baby was fighting up among the feces below. He raised an alarm and the other relatives and neighbours came out.

Prior to giving birth, the woman was seen by neighbours latest 12.30 on Thursday afternoon. By the time she was seen again one hour after, her tummy was flat.

When Priya was asked about the baby in the latrine she denied it was hers but when she was reminded that she was pregnant and that now her tummy is flat, she admitted that she began feeling pain and eventually gave birth.

A decision was taken to get the baby out of the latrine and have him rushed to the hospital but doctors lost their battle in keeping the child alive.
When we visited the home today, Priya was not there, we are informed that the police are investigating the matter.
