Murdered Butcher: Ortedis Duarte-Campas

Police detectives today received advice from the Director of Public Prosecution to charge Patrick Smith with the murder of Ortedis Duarte Campas, the Cuban National who was murdered on his way to work back in February of this year.

BIG Smith News Watch has been informed that Smith, a 25-year-old mason of 173 Campbell and Sussex Streets, Albouystown was given up to the police by a close associate of his who informed the police of his location.

The young man who was picked up two days ago provided the police a statement where he detailed the crime and also implicated another man who is now dead but who he identified as the trigger man.

That man was identified as Kevin Garraway who is now dead, Garraway was reportedly murdered just about two weeks ago at Home Town Village, West Coast Berbice. It is unclear if the murder of Garraway and the capture of Smith are related.

Smith told the police that the friend, Kevin Garraway went to his home with a motorcycle and asked that he, Smith accompany him to go and collect some money from the victim.

Smith related that Kevin was the pillion rider and when they reached Cummings Street, he saw the deceased walking towards them and then Kevin pulled out a gun and shot Campas before returning to the motorcycle and they rode away.

Smith told detectives that the following day he told a close associate of his about the development. The associate was then contacted and by the police. A stamen was also provided to the police by the associated which corroborated the statement of Smith.

Ortedis Duarte Campas worked at the Rossignol Butchery on Church Street for some time before his murder.

On the morning in question, we were told that Ortedis Duarte Campas put up a resistance to the approaches of the suspects who the police initially reported killed during the furtherance of a robbery.

Patrick Smith is expected to appear in court on Tuesday where the murder charge would be read to him.
