From academic setback to Attorney-at-Law: Alex Bacchus admitted to Guyana Bar

24-Y-O Alex Bacchus, a Region Three native, has been admitted to practise law in Guyana after an eight-year journey marked by perseverance, academic achievement and a commitment to public service.

Bacchus was formally admitted to practise before the Courts of Guyana across all jurisdictions during a ceremony at the High Court of the Supreme Court of Judicature in Georgetown recently.

His petition was heard by Chief Justice Navindra Singh and presented by Director of Public Prosecutions Shalimar Ali-Hack, SC.

He was among 23 Guyanese graduates of the Eugene Dupuch Law School in The Bahamas who have pursued their legal careers through the regional institution.

Bacchus’s achievement comes after an early academic setback that could have discouraged him from pursuing his ambitions. While attending Nations Sixth Form College, he failed a law examination but chose to resit it and continue working towards his goal of entering the legal profession.

He subsequently enrolled at the University of Guyana, initially studying International Relations in the Faculty of Social Sciences before transferring to the Faculty of Law in 2021.

In October 2024, he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree with Distinction, paving the way for further legal training at the Eugene Dupuch Law School.

During his professional development, Bacchus completed in-service training at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in Guyana and a judicial internship at the Caribbean Court of Justice in Trinidad and Tobago.

On September 4, 2026, he was awarded the Legal Education Certificate by the Council of Legal Education, completing the academic requirements for admission to the Bar.

Bacchus is the first attorney-at-law in his family, which has primarily been involved in business.

Addressing the court during his admission, he reflected on the responsibilities that accompany entry into the legal profession, stressing that the achievement extends beyond personal success.

“I am deeply conscious that admission to the Bar is not merely a personal achievement,” Bacchus stated. “It is the assumption of a solemn responsibility to the Court, to the profession, to the citizens of Guyana, and to the administration of justice. The title means little unless accompanied by character, competence, integrity, and service. The law is not simply a profession to be practised, but a responsibility to serve.”

He acknowledged that the journey was not always certain, crediting his faith, perseverance and the sacrifices made by his family for helping him overcome the challenges along the way.

Following his admission, Bacchus intends to begin his legal career as State Counsel attached to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, where he will prosecute criminal matters and contribute to the administration of justice.

The young attorney hopes his experience will encourage other young Guyanese not to allow early academic difficulties to define their futures.

“Eight years ago, I dreamt of standing before this Honourable Court. Today, by the grace of God, I stand here,” he concluded.
