East Canje robbery: Suspect held, gun recovered

A 27-year-old food vendor has been arrested as investigators probe an armed robbery on a 57-year-old businessman at No. 2 Village, East Canje, Berbice.
The robbery reportedly occurred around 7:35 p.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2026.
The suspect, who is from Vryman’s Erven, New Amsterdam, was arrested around 2:00 p.m. on Sunday as investigations progressed.
Investigators subsequently recovered $500,000 in cash and a motor car suspected to have been used in the robbery.
A search of the vehicle also led to the discovery of a .32 revolver containing two rounds of ammunition.
The cash, firearm, ammunition and vehicle have been lodged as investigations continue.
The suspect remains in custody as efforts are made to locate other persons suspected of involvement in the robbery.
