Calypso King Mighty Sparrow dies at 91

Legendary calypsonian Slinger Francisco, better known to the world as The Mighty Sparrow, has died at the age of 91, bringing an end to one of the most celebrated careers in Caribbean music.
Francisco died peacefully in New York on Sunday, September 27, 2026, surrounded by family and loved ones, according to a statement from his family. They said he had been experiencing a brief illness, but did not disclose further details.
Born on July 9, 1935, in Grand Roy, Grenada, Francisco moved with his parents to Trinidad and Tobago as a young child. It was there that he developed into one of calypso’s most recognizable voices and adopted the stage name Mighty Sparrow.
His major breakthrough came in 1956 with “Jean and Dinah,” a song that helped establish him as a major force in calypso. The song also earned him his first Trinidad and Tobago Calypso Monarch title.
Over a career spanning more than six decades, Sparrow recorded hundreds of songs and performed internationally, including at New York’s Madison Square Garden. His music frequently addressed politics, social issues, relationships, culture and everyday Caribbean life, often combining sharp social commentary with humour and melody.
Sparrow became widely known as the “Calypso King of the World” and was regarded as an influential figure in taking calypso beyond Trinidad and Tobago to audiences across the Caribbean and internationally. He won Trinidad and Tobago’s Calypso Monarch title eight times and the Carnival Road March competition eight times, according to the Jamaica Gleaner.
His contributions were also formally recognised. Trinidad and Tobago honoured him with national awards, while the University of the West Indies awarded him an honorary Doctor of Letters in 1987.
Tributes have begun pouring in from across the Caribbean, with political leaders, musicians and cultural organisations remembering Sparrow as a defining figure in Caribbean culture and calypso music.
The Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organisation described Sparrow as a defining voice of Caribbean culture whose music helped carry calypso from Trinidad and Tobago to the wider world.
With his passing, the Caribbean has lost one of its most recognizable musical voices. Mighty Sparrow leaves behind a vast musical catalogue and a legacy that spans generations of calypso and Caribbean performers.
