A ninety-one-year-old woman is among six persons who were displaced from their homes on Monday night after a fire walked through two buildings on Charlotte Street in Georgetown, between Light and Cummings Streets

Home owner, former national Basketball player Mark Agard in an interview with the press at the scene Monday evening, recalled that he and his family were at home when they saw smoke coming from the bedroom of a neighbour, whom he identified as June Henry.

According to the 58-year-old man, by the time they could have raised an alarm, the room was already engulfed in flames and the fire quickly spread through the building from the back to the front, before catching his home, which is literally like 6-feet away.

He said he believes the fire was able to engulf the woman’s house quickly as it was a wood structure which had been there for years.

The upper flat of his home, which was wood, was badly damaged but at the time he spoke with this publication, he said that the firefighters were busy trying to save the lower flat of his home which is made of concrete.

His mother, sister and himself are among the homeless, along with the neighbor and her two daughters.

When the BIG Smith News Watch arrived at the location, the firefighters were desperately working to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby buildings, even as hundreds of persons gathered to observe the operation.
