Fresh Nepal disaster leaves 14 dead as avalanche hits Himalayas

Nepal is facing another deadly wave of extreme weather, with heavy rains triggering floods and landslides that have killed at least 14 people and left several others missing, just weeks after catastrophic flooding along the Nepal-China border.

Authorities warned that the threat remains, with possible flash floods reported across large parts of the country as rivers and tributaries continue to rise. Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said 49 of the country’s 77 districts were facing potential flash-flood risks.

The latest deaths include four people three children and a woman who were killed when a landslide buried their home in Nishi Khola village in Baglung district, according to local officials. Across the country, infrastructure has also been damaged, with flooding disrupting electricity and telecommunications in several districts.

The extreme weather has also triggered a deadly avalanche at the base camp of Himlung Himal, a 7,126-metre mountain in northern Nepal near the Chinese border.

The avalanche struck early Sunday while Nepali expedition workers were preparing the camp for foreign climbers. At least two people have been confirmed dead, while reports indicate 14 expedition workers remain missing as rescuers continue searching the area. At least 10 people were rescued following the avalanche.

Rescue operations have been complicated by difficult mountain conditions. The missing workers were reportedly Nepali guides and support staff who had gone ahead of the foreign climbing teams to prepare tents and routes for the autumn climbing season.

The latest emergency comes only weeks after one of Nepal’s most devastating recent natural disasters. In late August, a major flash-flood and debris-flow disaster along the Nepal-China border devastated communities and infrastructure in northern Nepal.

By early September, Nepalese authorities had reported more than 1,000 deaths on the Nepal side, with thousands of people still listed as missing. The disaster was linked to an ice-rock avalanche originating from Mount Langtang Lirung, which generated a massive debris flow through valleys near the border.

The continuing succession of floods, landslides and avalanches has left authorities facing a difficult recovery while simultaneously responding to new emergencies.

Officials continue to monitor river levels and vulnerable mountain areas, while rescue teams search for those still missing from the latest disasters.

The situation remains fluid, with authorities warning communities in vulnerable areas to remain alert as further heavy rainfall could trigger additional flooding and landslides.
