Vickery survives three-set test to secure semifinal berth

Sachia Vickery kept Guyana’s medal hopes alive in tennis after overcoming Chile’s Antonia Vergara Rivera in three sets to reach the women’s singles semifinals at the South American Games in Rosario, Argentina.
Vickery prevailed 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in a gripping quarterfinal contest that tested both her composure and resilience.
Representing Guyana in the prestigious regional competition for the first time, Vickery stamped her authority on the match early, taking the opening set 6-2.
The Chilean refused to surrender and responded by claiming the second set 6-3, setting up a decisive third-set battle.
Vickery, however, drew on her considerable international experience and delivered when it mattered most. The Guyanese held off Vergara Rivera’s challenge to capture the deciding set 6-4 and book her place among the tournament’s final four.
Seeded seventh in the women’s singles draw, Vickery entered the competition with extensive experience on the international circuit and a career-high world ranking of 73.
Her victory places her within touching distance of the championship match as she continues her pursuit of a historic South American Games medal for Guyana.
