Fisherman remanded for fatally stabbing friend

A 28-year-old fisherman was remanded to prison on Wednesday after being charged with manslaughter in connection with the stabbing death of another fisherman at Albion, Corentyne.

Videsh Singh, of Lot 71 Albion Front, appeared at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy, where he was charged with unlawfully killing 34-year-old Franklyn “Frank” or “Franky” Sauers of Lot 247 Belvedere Village, Corentyne, on September 6, 2026.

Singh was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

His attorney, Vinay Punwa, applied for bail and told the court that Singh had earlier been involved in an altercation with Sauers at a bar. According to the defence, Singh left the location and went home, but Sauers later went to his premises and allegedly attacked him.

Punwa said Singh, fearing for his life and the safety of his family, armed himself with a knife, during which Sauers sustained the injuries that later proved fatal.

Police Prosecutor Corporal Meika Crawford objected to bail, noting that a life had been lost. She said the investigation remains incomplete, with police expected to obtain additional statements from witnesses in the area.

Crawford also raised concerns that Singh could interfere with evidence or witnesses if released. The court was further told that Sauers’ post-mortem report remains outstanding and that legal advice is being sought.

Magistrate Hardy refused bail and remanded Singh to prison until September 16, 2026, when the matter will return to court.

Police had previously reported that Sauers was found motionless in the living room of a house at Albion Front with apparent stab wounds to his neck and ribs. He was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Singh was arrested at the scene and was subsequently charged.
