Min Mustapha urges early action as Guyana faces El Niño conditions

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha today brought together farmers, technical agencies, private-sector representatives, development partners and other key stakeholders to strengthen Guyana’s preparedness for the ongoing El Niño conditions.

The El Niño Stakeholders’ Forum focused on practical measures to protect agricultural production as parts of the country experience reduced rainfall and higher temperatures.

Discussions centred on strengthening water management and irrigation systems, improving farmers’ access to timely and reliable climate information, and promoting climate-smart agricultural practices to reduce the impact of changing weather conditions.

Mustapha stressed the need for preparedness measures to move beyond planning and translate into practical action to support farmers and safeguard production.

The Minister also sought to reassure farmers that the Government’s approach is not intended to create panic, but to encourage early preparation, planning and action.

As El Niño conditions continue, the Government is maintaining its focus on protecting farmers, sustaining agricultural production and strengthening Guyana’s food and national security.
