U.S. resumes strikes on suspected drug boat

The U.S. military has carried out a lethal strike against an alleged drug-trafficking vessel in the eastern Pacific, killing two people, according to U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM).

The strike took place on August 23, 2026, and marks the first known U.S. attack of its kind in more than two months, according to reporting by The Associated Press.

SOUTHCOM said the vessel was a low-profile boat operating along established narcotics-trafficking routes in the eastern Pacific. U.S.

intelligence reportedly confirmed that the vessel was actively involved in drug trafficking. The command identified the two people killed as “narco-terrorists.”

The latest operation comes after a series of U.S. military strikes against suspected drug trafficking vessels in waters off Latin America.

The campaign has resulted in more than 210 deaths across more than 60 strikes, according to the Associated Press.

U.S. officials have defended the operations as part of Washington’s effort to disrupt drug trafficking networks and combat organizations it considers threats to U.S. national security.

SOUTHCOM says its counter-narcotics mission is aimed at applying pressure on drug cartels and narcoterrorist networks operating in the region.

However, the strikes have generated controversy over their legality and the evidence used to identify vessels as drug-trafficking targets.

The U.S. military has generally provided limited public information about the intelligence supporting individual strikes. In the latest incident, SOUTHCOM said the vessel was involved in narcotics trafficking but did not publicly provide details about drugs recovered from the boat.

The renewed strike signals that the U.S. campaign against suspected maritime drug trafficking remains active after the two-month lull.
