Six non-nationals, including Brazilian nationals and one Chinese national, have been detained after they were allegedly found conducting unauthorised mining activities in one of Guyana’s mining districts.
The individuals were detained on August 20 during an operation involving the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) Corps of Wardens and the Guyana Police Force.
According to authorities, the group was found operating an underground mining operation through a shaft without the required licences or approvals.
The six suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue.
The Ministry of Natural Resources said mining districts across Guyana remain under surveillance as authorities intensify efforts to detect and curb illegal mining activities.
The Ministry is reminding all miners and operators, both Guyanese and foreign, that they must obtain the necessary licences, permissions and regulatory approvals before commencing mining operations.
Authorities warned that anyone found conducting mining activities in breach of Guyana’s laws and regulations will face legal action.
