Dr. Ramayya in custody following fatal road accident

79-Y-O Dr. Veerasammy Ramayya, is in police custody following a fatal accident on Saturday night that claimed the life of a 42-year-old pedestrian on Nigg Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice.
The incident occurred at about 9:55 p.m. and involved motor car PZZ 1906, driven by Ramayya of Whim Village, Corentyne, and pedestrian Ishwarnauth Bisram of Belvedere Squatting Area, Corentyne.
According to preliminary investigations, Ramayya was driving east along the northern lane of Nigg Public Road when Bisram reportedly attempted to cross the roadway from south to north.
Police said Bisram walked into the path of the approaching vehicle. Ramayya reportedly applied his brakes, but the front of the car struck the pedestrian.
Bisram sustained injuries and was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His body was subsequently taken to Ramoo’s Funeral Home and is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
A breathalyser test administered to Ramayya recorded 11 micrograms, which is below the prescribed legal limit.
CCTV cameras were observed in the area and footage is expected to be reviewed as part of the investigation.
Ramayya remains in police custody as investigations continue.
