GPL warns contractors over work near power lines

August 10 2026
Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) is warning contractors, equipment operators and developers to exercise extreme caution when carrying out work near its electrical infrastructure.
The warning follows an incident on Monday in which GPL personnel observed contractors operating heavy-duty equipment close to the company’s distribution network along Agriculture Road, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara.
The operators were cautioned about maintaining safe clearances from power lines and other electrical infrastructure and taking the necessary precautions to prevent damage.
GPL said activities conducted near its network can pose serious safety risks, damage electrical infrastructure and result in service interruptions for customers.
The company is urging anyone planning work near its infrastructure to coordinate with GPL where necessary and strictly follow established safety standards.
GPL said it remains committed to protecting its network while maintaining reliable electricity services to customers.
