Hundreds of rice farmers from Region Three on Tuesday received government relief cheques totaling more than $201 million during a distribution exercise at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.

The exercise was led by Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha and fulfills a commitment made by President Dr. Irfaan Ali during a consultation with rice farmers at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre in April this year.

The financial assistance forms part of the Government’s targeted support for the rice industry as farmers continue to face rising production costs and challenges in the global agricultural market.

Under the initiative, farmers cultivating 50 acres or less are receiving $15,000 per acre, while those farming more than 50 acres are receiving $10,000 per acre.

In Region Three, 560 rice farmers cultivating a combined 15,636 acres are expected to benefit from the programme.

Nationwide, the Government is distributing approximately $2.763 billion in relief to rice farmers under the initiative.

Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture, Vikash Ramkissoon, also attended the distribution exercise.
