PORN & MUSIC: Meet 21-Y-O Kevon Roach

Kevon Roach would never have in his wildest dreams thought that his big break in life would come as a result of something that he would deem negative. Three years ago, a music professional stumbled upon his voice under the most unique circumstances.

Kevon, born and raised at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara, was still in school at the time, and the talk among him and his pals was all about a porn video that was leaked from a prominent school in Georgetown.

They decided to sing a song that more or less mocked the video, but that received over one hundred thousand views the first night it was uploaded on social media.

The next day in school, the guys were cheered on by their fellow classmates, who were playing the song and “banging it in our ears all day,” the 21-year-old recalled during a Zoom interview with BIG Smith News Watch.

Even though the song lampooned the subjects of the video, it nevertheless sought to divert attention from the young ladies, because they were already facing a lot of pressure. “So we wanted something else to take the spotlight, but the song was very descriptive and served its purpose,” Kevon said.

The group felt a bit bad afterwards though, because people knew them and approached them, asking why they would make a song like that. “We did an apology song afterwards…persons came directly to us and asked us to do some kind of apology video since we had so much of attention.”

During all of the craziness, Adrian Johnson of AJ Production heard Kevon singing and reached out to him and his friends.

“He heard it and saw the potential, and told me instead of doing this type of music which would give a negative outcome, I should do the opposite. He took me in, taught me the ropes, and said you can also do this type of music and it can get a much better outcome in the long run,” Kevon remembered.

“The actual thing is not something I am proud of, but that is the step that got me here,” he modestly acknowledged.

Since then, Kevon has been working with AJ Production.

“He’s been the person pushing me, advising me, teaching me, also marketing and promoting my music. He is the guy that offers support in any form, and not just to me, but to anyone who goes to the studio. He works with you.”

Mr. Johnson’s studio is located at Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara.

Even before meeting AJ, Kevon has loved music all his life. “I have been singing for my entire life because my house is above a church, and when I was younger, I would go downstairs and sing in the choir.”

Since starting to work with AJ, Kevon has been recording songs, applying it to a rhythm, getting it mixed and mastered, and marketing himself. “I write my own songs. Besides the beats, everything else is original, all created by me; whether it is a lyric video, cover art, the lyrics and melody for the song, everything!”

Kevon writes his songs based on real experiences in his life, being careful not to give out too much information or blow anyone’s cover. “So yeah, I get my own inspiration from the events I go through day to day. I just summarize it and put it in the most interesting way that I can possibly get it into.”

He added: “I see music as expressing myself not only in terms of feelings and emotions, but just getting a message out there. Instead of doing something violent, I can send a message through music that would produce a different outcome. I just see music as a window of expressing myself.”

His first song that he wrote and released is called ‘Slavery’. The approximately 12 others that were released include ‘Come Over,’ ‘Tonight,’ ‘One More Gal,’ and ‘Need Your Touch.’ Kevon has recorded about 30 others, which have not yet been released.

All of Kevon’s published music can be found on his YouTube Page.

Kevon is a third-year student at University of Guyana, pursuing a Degree in Environmental Studies. He attended Tutorial High School and completed Sixth Form at Saint Stanislaus College.
