Shaheed Mohammed, called “Max”, was today charged with the murder of seven-year-old Adriel Aftab Mohamed at Zeelugt EBE.

He appeared before Magistrate Alisha George at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court, where the indictable charge was read to him, which states on June 5, 2026, Mohammed murdered the child at Zeelugt.

He was not required to enter a plea and was remanded to prison. The matter was adjourned to July 20, 2026, for a report on statements.

23-Y-O Mohammed of Providence EBD, was arrested on Saturday after investigators intensified their probe into the killing.

Deputy Commissioner and Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum had previously disclosed that detectives obtained digital evidence placing the suspect at the scene of the crime at the time of the attack.

Police said the suspect later confessed after being confronted with the evidence and provided investigators with details of the incident.

Adriel was killed on the morning of June 5 while at home with his 72-year-old grandmother Haliman Itwaru.

The elderly woman was also attacked and stabbed during the ordeal.

A post-mortem examination conducted on Monday found that the child died from an incised wound to the neck and blunt force trauma.
