President Dr Irfaan Ali says government is actively exploring the possibility of light rail and train-based transport systems for Guyana.

The issue was raised during the President’s press conference earlier today.

Following recent transportation chaos which saw several bus and taxi operators striking as a result of rising fuel prices, the President said the growing volume of vehicles entering the city daily continues to place heavy strain on existing infrastructure, creating significant stress on commuters and the urban road network, as such the government is exploring options including that of a circuit system aimed at reducing further congestion central Georgetown.

He noted that discussions are still in process but the hubs are being considerer outside of the city, to decentralise activity.

President Ali emphasised that the objective is not to disrupt commerce or economic activity, but to improve traffic flow, reduce confusion, and create a more organised transportation system for commuters and businesses.

He said the government remains committed to studying modern transport solutions, including mass transit systems, as part of broader efforts to manage urban growth and improve mobility in a rapidly expanding city.
