Smart police stations, AI surveillance planned for Guyana – President Ali

May 22 2026
President Dr Irfaan Ali says Guyana is advancing plans for a modern, technology-driven national security system that will feature smart police stations, artificial intelligence-based monitoring, and countrywide CCTV coverage by 2030.
Speaking during a press conference earlier today, the Head of State outlined a vision for transforming the country’s security infrastructure through digital integration and advanced surveillance technologies.
Under the proposed system, smart police stations are expected to operate continuously using AI-powered platforms, online reporting systems, digital services, and real-time command and control mechanisms.
The initiative is intended to improve public access to services while strengthening confidence in the country’s security framework.
President Ali explained that citizens would eventually be able to access services such as police clearances without visiting physical stations, as digital kiosks are planned for strategic locations across the country.
The government is also moving ahead with the deployment of artificial intelligence tools capable of facial recognition, behavioural analysis, automated threat detection, and smart surveillance as part of broader crime prevention efforts.
AI-powered speed and traffic enforcement cameras are already being utilised on public roadways, with the systems able to generate reports on repeat offenders and feed information directly into the judicial process.
Additionally, a mobile enforcement pilot programme has been completed using vehicles equipped with technology capable of identifying motorists with outstanding traffic violations while travelling through communities. According to the President, one pilot exercise conducted on the East Coast detected more than 250 vehicles with outstanding infractions in a single operation.
He noted that the technology-driven approach is intended to minimise human interference by automatically identifying and recording violations within a centralised database system.
The President further stated that the Safe Country initiative will see CCTV coverage expanded to every region by 2030, alongside the integration of intelligent traffic management systems into the national security network.
