Police OPR digging out Deputy Commissioner Karimbaksh; Corporal goes deeper

As if the interference and obstruction of a lawful police anti-crime operation by Deputy Commissioner of Police Fizal Karimbaksh was not embarrassing enough for the Guyana Police Force, the Organisation is now more interested in finding out how the video ended up in the possession of this publication and is digging deep to pressuring the police corporal for answers while reportedly attempting to dig Karimbaksh out of his troubles; rather than focusing on the fact that he; on May 03, 2026, interfered and obstructed a lawful police operation which aimed at detecting and countering crime and criminal elements.

The alleged disgraceful behaviour of the Deputy Commissioner, which seems to have embarrassed the force and reportedly brought discredit to the organisation, was sent to the Regional Division’s Operations Rooms immediately after it was recorded, based on information we received from police sources. This means that the chain of custody of the video was compromised on the very day the video was taken, and as such, could have been distributed to this and other publications by anyone who had it.

This publication was made to understand that while Karimbaksh, up to press time, was not called upon to explain his actions, the police corporal whom he, Karimbaksh, instructed to release a female lawbreaker, is now being pressured by the Police Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).

According to sources familiar with the situation, the police corporal was summoned to the Police Office of Professional Responsibility. There, he was grilled extensively about the video and how this publication became of it.

Many are questioning the wisdom of the police force to go after the corporal while ignoring Deputy Commissioner Karimbaksh’s interference in a lawful police operation; Deputy Commissioner Karimbaksh’s obstruction of a lawful police operation; Deputy Commissioner Karimbaksh’s conduct on the phone while speaking to ranks executing their lawful duties; Deputy Commissioner Karimbaksh’s role in allowing a law-breaker to be released by the police; the question of judgement and critical assessment of a situation before passing instructions; the risk assessment to the general public by allowing an unlicensed driver (not produced when requested) to continue along with that offence, and refusal to allow the police to determine if the woman is even the holder of a driver’s licence in the first place.

The posture of the Police Office of Professional Responsibility in dealing with this matter gives credence to the public’s long-standing view that the organisation conveniently turns a blind eye to the transgressions of its senior officers, while leaving the junior ranks out in the cold.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Fizal Karimbaksh is no stranger to controversy and has been accused of several wrongdoings over the years, but each time, luck seems to strike in his favour. From shooting a child to alleged sexual predatory behaviour and accusations of his organisation’s manipulation of evidence in key investigations, Fizal Karimbaksh seems to always find a way out.
