Police across multiple divisions on the coastland conducted a series of operations over the weekend that led to the recovery of several firearms, ammunition, and other suspicious items, with multiple suspects now in custody and under investigation.

In one incident at Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, ranks in Regional Division 4 ‘C’ intercepted a motorcycle along the public road at around 18:30h on May 2. The 30-year-old rider, a resident of the Sparendaam Squatting Area, reportedly told officers that a firearm was in the possession of a colleague at his workplace.

Police escorted the man to the location, where a 34-year-old security officer retrieved a 9mm Taurus pistol with ten live rounds from a concealed area between lumber covered by a tarpaulin.

Both men failed to produce firearm licences and were arrested. The weapon and ammunition were lodged at the Beterverwagting Police Station as investigations continue.

Later that evening, at about 20:00h, police in Regional Division 4 ‘A’ recovered another firearm during a patrol at Regent and Light Streets, Georgetown. Acting on information received, ranks approached a 26-year-old Venezuelan national. The suspect allegedly attempted to draw a weapon from his waistband but was quickly disarmed. Police recovered a .38 revolver containing five spent shells. He was arrested and taken to the Alberttown Police Station. He remains in custody assisting with investigations.

Approximately one hour later, at around 21:00h, police responded to reports of a man armed with a firearm at Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara. Upon confronting a 27-year-old suspect from Better Hope, ranks alleged that he discharged several rounds in their direction, prompting officers to return fire.

The suspect fled but was apprehended after a chase during which he scaled several fences. A search led to the discovery of a black .32 CZ firearm. He was arrested and later treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for a gunshot wound to his right leg. He remains under police guard as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, in a separate operation on May 1 between 22:00h and 22:20h, ranks in Regional Division 4 ‘B’ conducted a search at Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara, acting on intelligence received.

During a search of a garbage heap, police discovered a duffle bag containing several items, including air guns, airsoft pistols, a paintball marker, two pairs of handcuffs, and a bulletproof vest. The items were taken to the Grove Police Station and lodged as investigations continue. No arrests have been made in connection with this discovery.

Police say all investigations remain ongoing.
