22 garbage trucks for Region Six to aid waste management services

April 10 2026
The Government of Guyana is advancing its nationwide solid waste management programme with the deployment of 22 garbage trucks to Region Six, aimed at strengthening sanitation services and improving waste disposal across communities.
In a statement issued on April 10, 2026, the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development confirmed that all 19 Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs), along with the region’s three municipalities, will benefit from the distribution of the vehicles. The move is expected to significantly enhance the capacity of local authorities to carry out timely and efficient garbage collection.
The investment forms part of a broader push by the government to upgrade community infrastructure, sanitation systems, and environmental health nationwide. Authorities noted that the additional trucks will improve collection schedules, contribute to cleaner surroundings, and support the maintenance of public spaces.
Local officials have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a major step forward for their communities. Chairperson of the Hogstye/Lancaster NDC, Sheron Smith, said the added resources will allow councils to better serve residents. She highlighted that subvention funding for the project will ensure services are provided at no cost to citizens.
The government emphasized that proper waste management remains critical to public health, environmental sustainability, and national development. By equipping local democratic organs with additional resources, authorities aim to improve efficiency and reliability in sanitation services.
The deployment is part of a wider national effort to modernise solid waste management systems and strengthen local governance across Guyana. Residents in Region Six are expected to benefit from improved waste collection once the trucks are fully operational.
The statement reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in essential public services, adding, “Once we [PPP/C] promise something, we deliver it.”
