MoA advances digital transformation of farming sector

The Ministry of Agriculture is moving decisively into a new era of technology as part of a broad push to modernise and strengthen the country’s agricultural sector, beginning with the launch of a new mobile application scheduled for rollout tomorrow.

This is according to Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha, during a recent episode of the ‘Starting Point’ podcast.

The Minister stated that the application is designed to provide open access to critical agricultural information, including real-time weather forecasts and location-specific farming guidance. Users will be able to view data on various regions across the country—such as Black Bush Polder and Linden—to determine which crops are most suitable for planting in those areas, helping farmers make better production and marketing decisions.

In addition to the mobile app, the ministry is advancing plans for the establishment of a national data centre and situation room, which is expected to be commissioned by March. Once operational, the facility is intended to serve not only Guyana but the wider Caribbean region. The centre is being developed based on a model from a similar institution in Costa Rica and is currently about 75 percent complete.

He added that the data centre will consolidate information on weather patterns, soil conditions, and crop performance, providing a centralised hub for analysis, planning, and rapid response to emerging agricultural challenges.

The Minister noted that digital transformation efforts also extend to the fisheries sector. A new digital marketplace is being developed for fisherfolk, alongside the deployment of tracking devices on fishing vessels. More than 500 vessels have already been equipped with these devices, which will allow for monitoring and rapid assistance in the event of emergencies at sea.

The ministry has acknowledged that technology adoption among farmers has traditionally been slow but says the new initiatives are aimed at changing that culture, improving efficiency, and ensuring greater resilience and competitiveness across the agricultural sector.
