Construction of Guyana’s first Law School to begin in 2026

Construction of a long-anticipated local law school in Guyana is set to begin in 2026 at the University of Guyana’s Turkeyen Campus, according to Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall.

The announcement was made during his presentation in the National Assembly as part of the Budget 2026 debates, where he confirmed that funding for the project has been included in the national budget.

Nandlall said the law school is expected to serve both Guyanese and students from across the Caribbean, offering more affordable access to legal education while strengthening Guyana’s role as a regional academic hub.

Preparatory work on the project advanced in 2025, including clearing 8 acres of land and the review of architectural designs.

The first capital allocation for construction forms part of the $1.558 trillion national budget.

Once completed, the institution is expected to expand opportunities for legal training locally and reduce reliance on overseas law schools.
