Two motorists have been fined after pleading guilty to Driving Under the Influence (DUI) in separate cases heard before magistrates’ courts in Demerara this week.

Zaheer Khaleel, the driver of minibus BAB 5549 who was previously charged and remanded, appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, February 5, 2026. He pleaded guilty to Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and was fined GYD $200,000.

Khaleel returned to court on Friday, February 6, 2026, where he faced an additional charge of Dangerous Driving arising from an incident that occurred on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at Fourteenth Avenue, Diamond. Although he pleaded guilty to the charge, the complainants in the matter indicated that they did not wish to offer evidence. As a result, the dangerous driving charge was dismissed.

In a separate matter, 49-year-old Eon Martin Perreira of Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, was charged with Driving a Motor Vehicle While his Breath Alcohol Level Exceeded the Prescribed Limit following investigations into a minor accident that occurred around 23:00 hrs on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, along Hauraruni on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.

Perreira was arrested on the night of the incident and formally charged on Friday, February 6, 2026.

He appeared before Magistrate Temeika Clarke at the Friendship Magistrate’s Court, where he pleaded guilty to the offence. He was fined GYD $150,000 or, in default, will serve four months’ imprisonment.

Both cases highlight ongoing enforcement efforts against impaired driving on Guyana’s roadways.
