Tributes have been pouring in from across Guyana and beyond following the death of respected educator and visionary Dr. Brian O’Toole, co-founder of the School of the Nations and Nations University, who passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at the age of 71.

Educators, former students, parents and members of the wider community have been reflecting on Dr. O’Toole’s lifelong commitment to education, service and nation-building. Many described him as a compassionate mentor whose influence extended far beyond the classroom.

Dr. O’Toole was also a devoted member of the Bahá’í community and was widely admired for integrating values such as service to humanity, integrity and unity into the institutions he helped establish. His work shaped an education model that emphasised academic excellence alongside character development.

In a statement, his family said Dr. O’Toole will be remembered for his kindness, strong work ethic, sense of humour and unwavering love and commitment to his faith, family and Guyana. They noted that his legacy of mentorship and compassion will continue to guide future generations.

Former students have taken to social media to share memories of Dr. O’Toole’s encouragement and personal guidance, crediting him with inspiring careers in education, public service and community leadership.

Dr. O’Toole is survived by his wife, Pamela, their children and five grandchildren. As tributes continue to flow, many say his contribution to Guyana’s education landscape will remain enduring and deeply felt.
