New Era for Young Hoopers: School’s Basketball League Launched!

January 9 2026
A brand-new basketball league is on the horizon, set to tip off on January 16 at various courts around the city. The exciting launch of the School’s Basketball League took place on Friday at the Transport Ground Auditorium, promising to ignite the passion for hoops among local youth.
This innovative league is the brainchild of national head coach Willon Cameron, who recognized the invaluable contributions of Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) while also noting that this league will carve its own path. “The School’s Basketball League is a coach-led, school-supported initiative born out of the need for more games for our youths,” said Willon, who is also the league’s chairman.
With ambitions to expand nationwide in the future, Willon envisions a thriving basketball culture across Guyana. Nicholas Fraser, head of the Ministry of Education’s Allied Arts Unit, emphasized the significance of starting small to create a lasting impact. “It’s the ‘small’ starts that are meaningful,” he stated, highlighting the potential for momentum to build into something extraordinary.
Jermain Slate, vice-president of the Guyana Basketball Federation, was also present to throw his support behind the league, assuring that the federation stands firmly behind this initiative. The league will run from January 16 to March 22, with each team competing in 10 thrilling games.
